Texas was a province of Mexico until 1835 when it declared itself as an independent Republic. The Mexicans made repeated attempts to conquer the new Republic, but were always defeated, especially in the memorable battle of San Jacinto, on the 21st of April, 1836, when the Mexican President, General Santa Anna, was taken prisoner and his army destroyed by a Texas force of half their own number.   The population rose from 7,000 in 1807, to 25,000 in 1835, and was over 100,000 in 1842.
