Toned views were published with a single sky and shadow tone added to an uncolored print. All follow closely the original colors of the time.

Alexandria, Virginia, 1864. Magnus's birds eye view from high above the river of the small town clustered around the river during the Civil War. Clearly a thriving river port which extends about 14 blocks up the gently sloping hill and is no more than 10 blocks wide. Many of the commercial buildings are near the harbor and the river is filled with steam and sailing ships. A legend of important buildings is provided.

Altoona, Pennsylvania, 1895 This map shows the railroad yard of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The view was originally drawn by T. M. Buffalo, New York, 1853. Hill's very handsome birds eye view of an infant city that has changed so much it is difficult to relate to this early view. The lake is on the left and the busy river and harbor is in the foreground. "Main" street extends from the front to the back of the print. In a city comprised mainly of four and five story buildings the skyline is dominated by church steeples. Industry and activity are everywhere. Many trees have been planted to make it a very attractive city. This is a handsome print.

Chicago, Illinois, 1779 and 1857. Kurz and Allison's historic views of early Chicago. The two large central views are Chicago from the Lake in 1830 with a population of 96 (wigwams and native Americans prominent), a birds eye view of Chicago from the lake with a population of 60,662, and 13 other smaller views of the city and its prominent building surrounding the two large central views. Included are Old Fort Dearborn erected in 1803, a view of Chicago in 1845 with a population of 12,088 etc. This is a most interesting and attractive set of views.

Fredericksburg, Virginia, 1856. Sachse' birds eye view is sketched from the opposite bank of the Rappanhanock River. A beautiful soft view of the town, its bridges, many finely drawn buildings against the pink glow off a setting sun. The river boats still show some activity around the mooring area. Hannibal, Missouri, 1869. Ruger's birds eye view from high above the Illinois side of the Mississippi looking towards the city of Hanibal. In the foreground Concord coaches and a Steam Ferry are meeting the train on the Illinois side of the river. Beyond a log raft on the river and the many steam boats is the town where Mark Twain loitered dreaming about becoming a steam boat pilot. The town sits in a valley with the business district along the waterfront area, the whole nestled in the surrounding hills. Very nice.

Helena, Montana, 1890. This birds eye view was published by the American Publishing Company. The gold strike at Last Chance Gulch in 1864 attracted thousands of miners to this site in the Montana Rockies. The rough frontier atmosphere gradually gave way as Helena became the state capitol in 1875 and was incorporated as a city in 1881. The central business district is at center nestled in the foothills of the mountain and the city spreads from that axis. Much of the city is laid out but not yet built on. An inset of "The East Side Additions of Lenox and Corbin" are included as well as 16 vignette views of prominent city buildings. A table is included identifying and locating 50 important sites and buildings. A very detailed view showing each building.

Philadelphia, 1702. Published in 1875 to celebrate the nation's centennial it shows the city in its early years with buildings huddled between Dock Creek and Market street on the Delaware River. The city has literally been carved out of the forest and a wigwam village is close. Three views along the bottom show Penn's Treaty, the area prior to settlement and the landing of the first traders.
