Abraham Ortelius, c.1590, Poloniae finitimarumgue locorum defcriptio. Fully colored, about 14 3/4 by 19 1/2 inches. A delightful and handsome map of Poland and Lithuania. Cartographical resources are based on Groidecki's 1562 map and emendations by Pograbka. Pograbka's influence is mostly evident on the right half of the plate. Groidecki's map itself based on Wapovsky's 1526 map. Quite decorative with a strap work title cartouche at lower left, a scale at upper left and a ship on a "wavy" ocean. Ortelius' genius is very apparent in this stunning map! The white marks are the reflection from the protective plastic wrap around the map.
It is very detailed and shows mountains, rivers, lakes, cities, towns and settlements. About 4250 were originally printed of which few remain. Condition is very good and the color is bright and crisp. $1600
