Abraham Ortelius, 1592, Gallia Regni Potentiss: Nova Descriptio. Ioanne Ioliveto Avcore. Fully colored, about 13 1/2 by 19 inches. A handsome map of "modern" France. Decorated with one large cartouche and one smaller royal crest. Has great detail including mountains, rivers, towns and cities. About 5,650 were printed of which few remain. Excellent condition and will be outstanding when framed. $850

Abraham Ortelius, c.1590, Gallia Vetvs. Attractively hand colored and measures about 14 1/4 by 18 1/4 inches. This is a beautiful map of ancient France. The map is bordered by a wonderfully intricate design. On the left side of the map is a list of famous people such as Cominius and Divitaeus and on the right side is a list of tribes in Gallia as described by Caesar. There are three handsome cartouches. The title cartouche is located in the upper left-hand corner and is surrounded by bold strap-work. A smaller, yet equally interesting cartouche, is located in the top right corner and includes beautiful calligraphy and nice strap-work. In the bottom left-hand corner of the map is another cartouche that is bordered by attractive strap-work and finely drawn illustrations. There are three sailing ships drawn on the surrounding oceans. Rivers, lakes, mountains, forests, towns, and important cities are carefully detailed on the map. Ortelius based this map on ancient information found in Caeser's De Bello Gallico. There were only 1,750 copies of this map printed. This is a wonderful map that will be outstanding when framed. $750

Abraham Ortelius, 1612, Bvrgvndiae Inferioris. Attractively colored and measures about 15 1/4 by 17 1/4 inches. This is a very handsome map of the French wine growing region known as Burgundy. The detail is beautiful and includes rivers, cities, towns, and landforms. Around the edge of the map is an attractive border. The map has two cartouches. The one in the top right-hand corner includes a scale and is surrounded by delicate strap-work. The second larger cartouche is in the lower left corner and contains the title in attractive calligraphy. It is bordered by elaborate, detailed strap-work, illustrations of bunches of wine grapes, and a regional coat of arms. This is a finely engraved map of one of the most famous wine growing regions in the world. It will be beautiful when framed. $500
