Giordano Ziletti/Cladius Ptolemy, 1564, Tabvla Asiae V (Persia). Uncolored, about 7 by 9 3/4 inches. A map of Persia which was originally published by Ptolemy who lived during the second century AD. About AD 150 (during the Roman Empire), Ptolemy published his "Geographia", a work in eight volumes supposedly illustrated by a map of the world and 26 regional maps. These maps were the maps of choice throughout the medieval period and, with the invention of the printing press, in c.1450 the "Geographia" was reprinted until 1621. These maps influenced and guided the medieval view of the world until the age of discovery.
The map is presented on a trapezoid projection with excellent detail, including "sugar loaf mountains" and rivers that resemble "Veins" and "arteries". The detail is very good. $225
