Abraham Ortelius, 1602, Japonia. Original old hand color, about 14 by 19 inches. A very handsome map of Japan, Korea, and China. This is an important map because it was the first map of Japan to be printed in the first recognized atlas to be sold commercially to the general public. It is attractively hand colored. The map is nicely decorative and shows many interesting features. There are estimated to be less than 130 copies from this edition in circulation. Edward Weller, 1858, The Empire of Japan. Outline hand color. About 17 by 12 inches. A very nicely detailed rendition showing the towns and cities and landforms. $115
A. J. Johnson, 1862-1867, Japan. Colored by province, about 12 1/2 by 15 3/4 inches. This is a wonderful, handsomely colored map of the Island of Japan. The map includes an inset of Yesso (and the Japanese Kuriles) and the Bay of Nagasaki. The map has wonderful detail of cities, towns and landforms. Johnson's maps from this series are particularly attractive because they include a handsome decorative border. Different editions have slightly different decorative borders. $135

S. D. U. K. (Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge), 1863, The Empire of Japan. Full original hand color. About 15 1/4 by 12 1/4 inches. A very nicely detailed rendition showing the towns and cities and landforms. An inset of Nagasaki Harbor and the eastern part of Yeso is included. S. D. U. K. are known for the accuracy and detail of their work. This map is no exception. $150
