Included are maps that cover large portions of Africa that do not specifically belong in any other section. Egypt will be found in the Middle East section under Asia.

Ortelius,1573,Africa.jpg (68761 bytes)

Abraham Ortelius, 1573 Africae Tabula Nova  Colored, about 15 1/2 by 19 3/4 inches. A wonderful early map of Africa based on Gastaldi's 1564 eight sheet map of Africa, as well as elements from Mercator's 1569 World map. Although only the coastal regions of this vast continent have been reasonably mapped and known, the interior of the map is detailed completely. For example, the Nile flows almost the complete length of Africa. A truly wonderful early map which continues to show some of the mistakes of earlier cartographers. About 7300 were printed of which very few remain. Good detail of cities, towns, and landforms, much of which is speculative. Includes a large strap-work title cartouche, several ships and two sea monsters as part of the decorations.  $4685

Thumb, Mitchell, Africa.jpg (16026 bytes)

Samuel Augustus Mitchell, c.1867, Africa. Handsome in full color, about 10 1/2 by 13 1/2  inches. A handsome map showing countries, rivers, mountains, cities, and rail. Mitchell's maps from this series are some of the most attractive maps of the period.  This map is enhanced with a decorative "garland" of flowers which provides a handsome border, making this an especially attractive map. Different editions have a slightly different decorative border.    $195

Thumb Johnson Africa.jpg (8474 bytes)

A. J. Johnson, c.1864, Africa. Hand colored, about 23 by 17 inches.  A larger detailed map showing countries, cities and towns.  Also includes roads, rail lines and landforms. The extent of the state of exploration at the time is clearly shown.  A handsome map with a decorative border.  Different editions may have slightly different borders.  Earlier editions of this map include several vignettes.  This edition includes three small insets at the top of the map: "Liberia", "Cape Colony" (South Africa) and "The Nile".  $115

(The scan distorts the colors.  The map has no blue sheen at all.  The map "sea area" color is uniformly slightly off-white, crisp, clear and clean)

Thumb, Century Atlas, Africa.jpg (13170 bytes)

Matthew Northrup's Century Atlas, c.1900, Africa. Printed color, about 15 by 10 1/2 inches. A very fine "modern" looking map with a "piano key" border. A political map which shows Africa at a stage where the colonial structure is all but complete. Very nicely detailed showing  landforms, political boundaries, cities and towns.   A map known for its attention to detail and accuracy.  A map of choice for many collectors.  $65

(The brown and darkening color distortion is from the scanner.  The map is crisp and clean and evenly colored.)

McNally,1895,Africa.jpg (92092 bytes)

Rand McNally, c.1898, Africa. Full color, about 18 by 12 1/2 inches. A mid size colonial map of Africa at a time that the colonial holdings were all but complete.  Very nicely detailed showing  landforms, political boundaries, cities and towns.  Also includes a table (not shown in picture) on the left and right of the map of land area detailing chief cities.  The technology used to develop these maps was so advanced that they at once made all competitors maps obsolete.   $50

(Because of the size of our scanner, the margins appear to be cut off in the picture, however the map is complete.)
